Sobre Angie Rangel como artista:

1. ¿Where are you from, and how does your background influence your art?

2. ¿What inspired you to become an artist?

I was inspired by my desire to explore the world—its sunsets, landscapes, nights in different cities. Ultimately, it’s the movement and curiosity that drive me.

3. ¿When did you start exploring art as a profession?

My mother recognized my creative potential from a young age and encouraged me to pursue art, even though neither of us knew how challenging the journey would be. She has been one of my greatest motivators, pushing me to follow the path where I felt most comfortable and to strive for success while finding ways to make a living through my passion. And what a beautiful chaos we embarked on!

Seeing my art connect with others on an emotional level and being recognized in exhibitions and collections has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling through art.

Sobre la Técnica que usa Angie Rangel:

5. ¿What materials and techniques do you use in your work?

After the pandemic, I developed an interest in working with acrylics and oil paints, which led me to immerse myself in mastering these techniques. I dedicated two years to studying color theory with guidance from the masters at the art school in Barranquilla. Acrylics allow me to work quickly and layer dynamically, while oils offer a richness and depth that enhance the emotional impact of my work. My focus on color stems from its ability to evoke powerful emotions and create connections between the viewer and the themes of memory and identity that I explore in my art.”

6. ¿How much time do you dedicate to each piece?

It depends on the size—smaller works take me about 3-5 weeks, while larger ones can take months, depending on their complexity.

I choose my palette based on the emotions and themes I want to convey. Each color is carefully selected to evoke a specific mood or connection, often inspired by my cultural roots and memories.”

8. ¿Are there recurring elements in your work? What do they represent?

Yes, recurring elements like butterflies, crocodiles, and traditional symbols reflect transformation, resilience, and a connection to my heritage. Dresses are an essential part of my work, inspired by childhood memories, making them a visible symbol in my pieces. Cages also appear frequently, along with the white rabbit and everyday objects, each carrying its own metaphorical weight. These elements represent themes of memory, freedom, and the intersection between the ordinary and the surreal.

My art is a reflection of a life philosophy that embraces ambiguity and finds beauty in continuous transformation, recognizing that our identity is constantly evolving while maintaining connections to our cultural and personal heritage.

12. ¿”What artists or artistic movements have influenced you the most?

I am deeply influenced by Surrealist pioneers like Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, whose symbolic and dreamlike worlds inspire my exploration of memory and femininity. Frida Kahlo’s personal storytelling and cultural pride resonate with my connection to heritage, while Georgia O’Keeffe’s abstract natural forms and Mary Cassatt’s focus on intimacy shape my approach to emotional expression. Movements like Surrealism, Expressionism, and Impressionism play a key role in how I use color, light, and emotion to evoke transformation and connection in my work.
